WEST DEEPING & QUARRIES, QUARRIES, QUARRIES.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
Breedon’s Public Exhibition for quarry site SG17 (previously allocated MS29 site without plant) will add in all of the industrial ancillary services including a processing plant right next to village homes. SG17 will also create the infrastructure for further quarrying to the South of the village including but not restricted to SG11 (a site referenced on the LCC Draft Allocation of sites 2022). Once quarried, SG17 & SG11 combined with years of local quarrying will leave only 25% of the Parish un-quarried. These new sites will clearly present many risks for our local community, including Mental and Physical Health, River Health, Local Habitat, Impact on Listed Buildings and Environmental damage to name only a few.
After more than 70 years living with quarrying in and around our parish, it’s time to make a stand! Together, with the community, we will do that. Enough is Enough!
70 YEARS OF ACCEPTANCE BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
2022
DRAFT
For 70 years, our community has acknowledged and accepted the necessity of sand & gravel extraction and processing machinery operations within our Parish boundaries. We have witnessed the excavation and destruction of our landscape, endured the adverse effects of quarry operations and accepted impacts including amplified local quarry traffic, persistent noise and dust pollution, as well as intrusive light pollution. Delayed and protracted ongoing restoration efforts have spanned decades, the scars on our landscape persist. It is a poignant realisation that after seven decades, we find ourselves still grappling with these challenges. Enough is Enough!
Regrettably, the LCC preferred approach to adopt SG17 will mean the quarry will be less than 200 metres from villagers homes, with the intrusive presence of a processing plant adjacent to our village. Even the most thorough restoration efforts cannot fully undo the profound impacts inflicted upon our local communities, encompassing both detrimental health effects and severe environmental consequences. These sites present an elevated level of threats to the well-being of individuals, river health, local ecosystems, and the broader environment. Their operation, expected to span two to three decades, six days a week, would result in nearly a century of continuous quarrying within our Parish, amounting to 75% of our Parish subjected to disturbance, destruction and permanent change. Surely, there must be limits on the burdens imposed upon a community and the extent to which their environment is detrimentally affected. The pursuit of profit should never come at the expense of the quality of life and the environment we cherish.
EVERYONE DESERVES TO LIVE IN A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT
Our Mission
TWO NEW QUARRY SITES TARGETED IN THE PARISH: Already 70 years tolerating quarrying, and half the parish mined, NO MORE! Residents say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”. The new proposals - to destroy another 250 acres, close to homes and gardens, have sparked shock, dismay, and anger. It feels like mineral targets are prioritised over community health, quality of life, and the preservation of our environment and historical agricultural landscape and prime farming land to be destroyed for eternity.
Residents are working hard to fight these proposals, facing challenges such as:
Complex legislation - Lengthy processes - Lack of transparency - Endless policies
Our Parish Council is doing us proud, but this challenge exceeds their usual duties and resources. They, and each and everyone of us now facing a huge battle. Thankfully, others in the community are also applying their expertise and fighting this in key areas. The more resistance the better!
However, many of us don’t have the time to gather, process, and plan alone. That’s why we’ve come together, to pool community ideas and harness strength in numbers. By uniting at critical junctures, we amplify our voice and present a strong, united front. Please, keep those ideas coming. To summarise, we have formed to: gather and research/analyse data, raise awareness (including lobbying key influencers), plan and prioritise key strategies, mobilise, generate as much support for our fight and empower our Community Voice.
Our Aims
Stop the new sites - SG17 is the first, previously referenced as MS29 but now with a processing plant right next to the village. We urgently need to prevent its addition to LCC’s Mineral Plan. Breedon have confirmed that SG11(inc the LCC Site nominations Report 2022 but not in the draft plan yet), is a site they wish to mine after SG17. The sites combined add an additional 250 acres of Parish mined! West Deeping has had enough quarrying, it is time to save the remaining Parish.
Defend against other future quarry expansion and extensions in West Deeping Parish through effective monitoring & governance, including challenging the wrongful inclusion of MS29-SL in LCC’s Mineral Plan.
Minimise the detrimental impact of all approved planning applications.
We are a group of local residents focused on empowering the voice of the community, uniting our collective voice and passion to protect where we live, the lovely Parish of West Deeping.
Your support will make all the difference, whether leaflet dropping, contributing skills, with professional expertise, writing letters etc. If you would like to know more please click below. Thank you.
WORTH FIGHTING FOR!
